Motivational Interveiwing...A collaborative conversation to strengthen a person's motivation for change.

We all feel two ways about making changes in our lives.  Whether it is smoking, diet, drug/alcohol, budgeting or any other major life decision— uncertainty is normal.  Motivational Interviewing is an approach that helps people resolve that anxiety and uncertainty and make healthy choices that they can then commit to.

I have trained thousands of practitioners and hundreds of trainers in this approach over the past  15+ years. I attended the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers(MINT) Train-the-Trainer event in 2010 and I am a current active member of that international organization.

The MI Trainings I offer In-Person or Virtual can be tailored to meet your needs and budget...

Introductory Workshops- This is typically a 2 day workshop. Participants build a foundational understanding of both the spirit and skills associated with MI.

Intermediate/Advanced Workshops-This 2 day workshop takes place roughly 1 month after completing an Intrducotory Workshop. With an increased emphasis on practice and coaching, a shift from having learned about MI to an actual increase in skill and ability takes place.

Audio Recording with Coaching Feedback- One of the essential elements to actual skill development is the opportunity to have the participants receive individualized feedback on conversations they are having outside of the training environment. Audio recorded sessions are submitted electronically, reviewed, and coaching feedback is provided. Ideally, these recorded sessions take place between the Introductory and Intermediate/Advanced Workshops-giving the participant an objective understanding of what they are doing well and where there might be areas for growth.

Train-the-Trainer Workshops- Individually tailored to suit the needs of the agency, this workshop is geared towards equipping the organization with the internal capacity needed to further its implementation of MI with fidelity. In addition to providing new trainers with curriculum, this workshop focuses heavily on overall facilitation/training skills.

Motivational Interviewing for Managers- This workshop is typically delivered in 1.5-2 hours and focuses on the vital role managers and supervisors play in the implementation of MI.  Topics include a discussion of effective training models, quality assurance practices and the utility of applying this approach to the supervision of staff.

Disciplines I have supported with this approach include:  Corrections, Education, Healthcare, Mental Health, Public Health, Social work.
